I am so pleased with the idea of a publication
that will bring Sacconi's personality and art back to everyone's memory and
admiration. Unfortunately, although I played the violin and then the viola for
years, I never had the fortune of knowing him personally, but only indirectly
through what my teacher Remy Principe and many other artists told me about this
«magician».
I am convinced that the mystery of violinmaking
is the mystery of art, and without doubt, Sacconi was a great artist. Science
can never answer the question of why that piece of wood produces that
sound. But Sacconi, like all the great violinmakers, had the answer. He knew
how to care for an antique instrument or heal an infirm one, as well as how to
give life to one of his own new ones.
